As a photogapher we sometimes go on vacation or travel somewhere where we can refresh our minds and find something interesting to work on. Aside from our usual source of fun which are photo contests, we can also go to different such as tourist spots, exotic places with breath-taking views and scenarios, or if you like ancient architectures as subject then why not pack your bag for a week long photography travel?
Travel photography is somewhat similar to photo contests. The obvious difference is you go from place to place and make a journal of your journey. But first you should know where to start your photo travel. The are several fantastic places photographers find to be very rich with fascinating subjects. In my opinion, the best country for photography would be the one country that offers everything a photographer would want to photograph.
And that would include:
-Natural beauty
-Bustling cities
-Mountains and snow
-Tropical beaches
-Deserts
-Unique architecture
-Friendly people
-Interesting subjects
Again, the best country would have all these things. However, like in photo competitions, any country is can be the best country all you have to do is find the good shots. If I were to choose, I’d always choose countries vibrant natural landscapes. I love nature, landscapes and animals so I would probably visit countries that could provide me with these subjects.
When you visit a country, keep in mind the first and last hour of daylight which is also known as the ‘golden hour,’ which, under the right conditions, can often lead to a soft and warm glow on anything in its path. In photo competitions, these are valuable things to remember and so as to traveling since not all countries have the same hours of the day.
The basics of photography contest can be also applied in travel photography such as the rules of third, proper cropping and framing. Since you’re doing travel photography, it makes a lot of sense to focus on subjects which are unique or distinctive about the place you’ve spent thousands of dollars to visit. Just like photography contest, another subject area is the people in the place where you’re travelling. It would be more realistic to take pictures of them in their clothing since other countries are accustomed to wear a particular attire.
In picture contests, taking pictures while riding a vehicle maybe difficult but somehow you have to adjust yourself with it if you decide to try travel photography. Travel mostly involves some amount of place hopping which generally means moving vehicles. These cases can be very valuable from both picture contest and travel photography point of view, but you need to make some adjustments to your normal techniques to get better results. The main issues involve vibrations of the vehicle, and reflections and distortions from any windows between you and your subject. To neutralize the shaking, set the shutter speed to the inverse of the focal length of your lens, or even faster - like for a 100mm, set the shutter speed to 1/100th of a second, or faster. However, if you’re in a moving or vibrating vehicle, then you should double or even quadruple the shutter speed, meaning a speed of 1/200th or even 1/400th of a second for a 100mm lens. If you don’t do this then you might end up with blurry photos.
